The Smiths began participating in family counseling sessions when the Smith children started having problems in school.
The children, April and William, had always done well in school. However, this year was different.
Their mother, Julia, first became aware of problems when she started getting notes from April's teacher. April was talking in class and not completing her work assignments. Soon, April was in trouble for fighting with classmates and for talking back to teachers. She was suspended several times.
Not long after problems started with April, William began to show similar behavior. Julia decided she needed help. Julia is a single mother, works a full-time job and attends a local community college. She was stretched to her limit.
With the help of a Host Homes counselor, the family began to understand their strengths and their weaknesses. Julia learned to better manage her stress while helping her children deal with their concerns over her busy schedule and their father's absence. April and William leaded to communicate their thoughts and feeling, rather than acting them out in problematic ways.
Now, the family is better able to work out their concerns and problems, and to enjoy their time together.
